Highlights from Mission to Mexico

Oct 16-21, 2005

Homes for the Homeless

We have had the privilege of hooking up with Strategic Alliance Ministries to build a home for a homeless family in Reynosa, Mexico. SA has been doing this since 1992 and have built hundreds of homes. I, Thomas, had the priviledge of leading a team of 6 people from my home church, Open Door Church, to Mexico to build a simple home for a homeless family from the ground up. We appreciated all of your prayers and support. The family we built this home for is born-again and now they have experienced the love of God in a practical way.

If you are interested in going on a trip like this or getting a group from your church to go, please contact me and I can get you started in the right direction.

Mission to Mexico was an outreach of Open Door Church of Suffolk, Virginia

MEXICO MAP

This is the team: Me, Bobby Farrell, Roland Griggs, Brooke Cornwell, Tim Wall, and Cathy Wall
We hooked up with Strategic Alliance Ministries, above, Nick Ashby, Carolyn Ashby, Roland Ashby and standing is Frank who assists the Ashby's with their ministry.
We had a flat on the way to Mexico but that did not dampen our spirits...we had a spare.
A marketplace in Mexico.
There are all kinds of inexpensive items to get here. Make sure you talk them down before you buy though.
Even real sterling silver and other jewelry at very low costs.
Here is the taco stand many from our group ate from nightly. The best tacos I've ever had in my life!
Here is a man that owned a bakery inside the colonia, the neighborhood, where we built the house. You see his oven there.
There were children everywhere.
They were so adorable.
They always came to watch us build every day.
Imagine raising your child with the poorest of poor conditions. No electricity, running water, or sanitation. All your income is just enough to pay for food and clothes and nothing else.
Jesus loves these precious ones.
Here is David. We were building a home for his family.
The Mexicans were some of the kindest people I've ever met.
They are extremely hospitable...always trying to feed you even though they have very little.
This mother lived across the street. You can see her "house" in blue in the background.
You see the family here, to the right of Bobby and to the left of Nick, for which we built the house. They were Jesus, Maria, Miriam, and David. Also in the picture is the next door neighbors on the left.
That pile of trash below the green house is where a family lived. Another team built a house for them the same time we built ours.
This is the "house" where our family used to live.
That's me getting started on the foundation with the help of my team and Miriam.
The foundation is done. That completed day one (out of four).
This is the neighbors and Brooke from our team painting the walls.
Now two walls are up.
The roof is almost complete.
Now just lay the aluminum roofing and we're almost done.
Me doing some finishing touches.
The house is complete!
The new house for this precious family!
It got really hot sometimes but we had plenty of purified water to cool us down.
Here's my guys "horsing" around.
That's our team taking a lunch break.
That is us inside the new house with the family in the middle.
That's our team behind the house resting in the shade.
This was one of many carts that would transport junk from place to place. These were everywhere.
